  1. Mr Meredith’s first name was Philip.
Mr Shiel’s real first name was Norman
Mr Triplow’s first name was David

  2. Mr Meredith’s first name was indeed Philip – not sure whether one or two l’s. His nickname was simply Phil.

In chemistry demonstrations, he would call boys forward to see more clearly – but no further than an imaginary line which he took delight in calling “a menagerie lion.”

  3. OK here goes for Photo identification. Dick Scarrot 2nd left (level and next to Gumsie); Jock Jago 4th left at rear; Basil Selley 5th left at rear; Dennis Dyson 6th left level with Basil; Godfrey Slatter top far right white jacket, next to Jumbo; Brian Smith far right hand on hip;Chris Finn to the left (as we look) and level in front of Brian; Spock Lanfear to the left and level with Brian, slightly above left to Chris Finn, holding jacket over shoulder in his left hand; Robin Hone most front, centre right; immediately to the left (as we look) Ivor Clarry, two to the left of Ivor is Edward Revill, known as “Groat”; Boris Jenner is 2 to the left of Jumbo (as we look). I can’t see Harry Guest in that Photo unless that’s him centre rear with glasses to the left of Jumbo (as we look) ?; Dave Lee is centre left, front, standing side on with light trousers; far left front, hands behind back, buttoned jacket might be Travor Huxtable ? we knew him as Cornelius. Far right bushy hair, moustache and striped jacket might be Ian Wright – “Iggy”. Hope that helps !

  4. A couple of minor additions from a pull of the 1960’s.

Mr Revil was referred to as “Ted”.
    Mr Brooks we called “Rupert”
Ken Parker was the ubiquitous Caretaker.
Mr Meredith was referred to as “Phil”

I think both Messrs Bolt and McGabe shared Johnas Christian names.

  5. Dennis Dyson was known as ‘Socks’ in my time (1955-65)
    Never did find out why.
Anybody remember the delightful name for Mr, Henwood (Chemistry)?
    ‘Chickweed’

  6. Re Geoff Arnold – the Mr Bolt I remember was nicknamed “Billy”. (If you have a brother Chris, hello to you both from David Healy)

Re Tony Venning – Yes, I remember “Chickweed.” ( and hello to you, too)

  7. Excellent picture that brings back some memories! A bit more identification – David Gale, who sadly passed away recently, is behind Ivor Clarry.

  8. Hello!

We are current Lower Sixth students studying at the school, and are writing for the Exonian Magazine.
Would you have time to answer some questions, please? We enjoyed the site.

    Many thanks.

    1. Hi Simon,

      I hope you are well.

If it is okay with you, it would be great to learn a little bit about yourself and your time at the school and then perhaps we could move ahead to some questions which, if you are all happy, of course, would be great to feature in the new edition of the Exonian. If you are interested, it would be wonderful to ask some more questions alongside those below, on broader topics et al.

      Would you mind telling me a little bit about your time at the school, for example;
What subjects did you study, or particularly enjoy?
Were you a boarding student or a day student?
      What House were you in?
Did you do any extracurriculars, such as CCF?
What are you up to now?

Many thanks again; It is wonderful to hear from a former pupil!

      Kind Regards,
      Tyler.
